The pagan/satanist/wiccan references seem unresearched and over-the-top in a hokey to me, but I certainly wouldn’t consider it offensive. I can’t help but wonder if this shoot will make it to the good old USA. I have serious suspicions that as tame as this spread is, it may cause a row among any fundamentalist Christian readership in the US.
Anyone with the September issue of Vogue US care to confirm whether or not the same story is present? I realize each of the Vogue editions is technically its own thing, but I’m so curious.
They may do this - or something like it - for the US October magazine. That would be more timely, given the long time association of “witches” with Halloween, the history of all 3 practices in this country (sporadic fads producing popularity that dies out, but almost always a few constant practitioners) and the legit holiday(s) which falls around Halloween.
If this is the way fashion’s going to run, then bust out the black, the ouija board, the absinthe and the chickens: It’s gonna get freaky up in here.
In two nicely done videos over at VideoJug, you can learn how to press your shirts and pants yourself. Not only does this save you tons of money in laundry services (not to mention the gas to pick them up), but it also prepares you for situations where laundry services may not be available.
Of all the garments to iron, your shirts and jackets would be the most important. In this video that’s bizzarely devoid of mouth movements on the part of the demonstrator (even though I think she may be the narrator as well), you’ll learn all the basics of shirt ironing, plus a few tips for less common situations. This one isn’t for the short-of-attention span though, it weighs in at an ADD-straining 7 minutes and 57 seconds.
After you’ve mastered making sure your upper half is in order, you can watch the video on how to keep your pants from looking like you slept in them all week (even if you have). This one is a bit shorter, and isn’t as robust in its explanation of certain oddities and tricks, but still very useful.
Be sure to visit the VideoJug site if these are helpful to you. On the video pages themselves is a complete, written out set of instructions and materials you’ll need to become an ironing master. The VideoJug site is wonderfully laid out and easy to navigate, they also have (according to them) over 26,000 “professionally-made advice” videos. I picture spending a lot of time there in the near future.
Last night I dreamt that I was in a big red house (almost maroon it was so dark) with dark green shutters. The house itself was malevolent, clearly had it in for me and my family. I don’t remember the interior that well, but I’m almost positive I’d dreamed some of it. At some point my family and I were whisked - instantly - away from this vile place, and watched from a great distance as it blew off its foundation and landed on a nearby town. Later on while I was thinking about it, the feeling the house gave me was the same feeling I got when I first read about The Mansion in Dutch Hill in The Dark Tower series. (Which I may have mentioned recently that I have been re-reading.)
Gentle Readers,
I am torn. Every year I say I am going to do something so unbelievably wicked awesome for halloween. Every year I flake out.
This year should be different. I have 2 ideas in mind. One involves a lot of money and would need to be done soon, one involves a lot of time and maybe a little less money and skills I don’t necessarily have. Read the rest of this entry »
Tonight or tomorrow I will be upgrading to Wordpress 2.3. What this means for you as a reader is: mo-betta tags and a faster blog.
It may also mean more authors! With the addition of a feature called “pending review”, it means I can invite others to share this blog space and still maintain the RKNet quality you know (I hope) and love (I hope!). (Also, if you have an interest in contributing let me know!) I hope to step up with providing more constant content, and more original content, and having other authors would help immensely in that.
This might also mean some issues, since I’m a little fuzzy on the whole wordpress update process, but I’ve got some assistance and I’m hoping for the best!
A recent article on Slashdot caught my eye when it noted feedback from a New Hampshire resident complaining that the lack of high speed internet was preventing him from doing business, and also noted that his was not the only business affected by the lack of development in the state.
Amanita Design, responsible for the two beautiful flash games: Samarost and Samarost 2, are now working on a full-length adventure game! According to the tantalizing siteWe expect to release the game in the 2nd half of 2008.
Right now the site only has the basic announcement, 2 tantalizing bits of delicious art, and a forum. The forum appears to be a little empty right now. I would strongly encourage anyone who enjoyed the Samarost games to pop by and give the Amanita Design team a word of thanks! Besides, the more talk generated in the forums, the more they might feel inclined to drop a few more hints of what’s to come! Nudge nudge, wink wink.
The world of those who love fantasy literature has taken yet another blow. Robert Jordan died yesterday at 2:45pm after a long battle with primary amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy (cardiac amyloidosis). He is best known for his long running series of novels, The Wheel of Time. Jordan was working on the 12th and final novel during the period leading up to his death. No word has been given at this time on what will be done with that manuscript. Some of Jordan’s other work includes his installments on the Conan the Barbarian series of novels.
When I was at the Gathering of the Vibes earlier this year, there was a peace demonstration on Sunday (the last day). The theme was unity. Flags of all the world were given out, and each country’s name was spoken aloud. Incidentally, I think they skipped a few names - notably Israel by way of repeating Ireland - but I wasn’t paying strictest attention so I couldn’t say for sure. The whole thing was very somber and very poignant - and by that I mean self-inflated and dull as hell. Perhaps if I’d been down where the flags were being waved, where the most activity was taking place, it might have felt more meaningful and genuine.
Instead I present you with a much more entertaining reading of the countries of the world. This is from years ago so it’s not really accurate with the current and apparently a few were skipped.
A nursing home? Gentle readers I am appalled. This woman, as aptly noted in the AP article, had contributed to the formative years of children (and adults for that matter) since the 60’s. She had three children of her own. So much of her work centers around family, and the strength of that bond. I absolutely cannot fathom this world in which someone like her could reach the end of her life in a nursing home. I don’t really give a rat’s ass if it was the finest nursing home on all the earth’s face (and most of them really aren’t great shakes if you do a bit of research), it’s still a damn nursing home.
I am more saddened than anything, both at the whole “nursing home” thing and the loss of a wonderful author. She will be missed by many, and I am undoubtedly among that many. Goodbye dear Madeline, and thank you for everything.
Some kids play in the sandbox. We play in the.... litterbox??? The RKNet staff is pleased that you decided to stop by. Currently this is a 1 author project, with periodic guest posts. Contact giania [at symbol] gmail.com if you'd like to play here to.
