Top Magazine Covers of 2007

The American Society of Magazine Editors over at magazine.org have picked their favorite covers of 2007. The seven categories looked at overall cover qualities, cover specifics, and industry types. There are some doozies, and Stephen Colbert made it on the list three times with his appearences on the cover of Wired and GQ.

Most of the choices seem sensible, but the Service and Fashion covers strike me as somewhat uninspired.

My personal favorite?

Love the cover - do you think the judges knew that the coverline was a remix (NatLamp)? Which would be worse - Cheney shoots you in the face (shotgun) or Cheney shoots you in the face (Japanese word I can’t bring myself to type)?

Uncertain as to whether or not the judges knew, but from what I could gather from some basic searching, editor Evan Smith ( http://www.texasmonthly.com/authors/evansmith.php ) apparently made a direct reference to the NatLamp cover as part of a piece he wrote for that issue, crediting them with the inspiration. Couldn’t find the actual statement, because the Texas Monthly site requires a subscription to read archives. BugMeNot provided no viable login, or I’d fish for a direct quote that way.
