Better Late Than Never: Halloween Treat

Some time after he donned fishnets and a corset for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and before he scared the ever-loving crap out of me in IT (1990), Tim Curry found himself in a made-for-television film called The Worst Witch. With other notable names such as Diana Rigg, Fairuza Balk (a hilarious role given her later part in The Craft) and Mrs. Garrett from The Facts of Life (playing two rather comical roles), this was a favorite film of mine when I was but a wee lass. I rented it again this year in lieu of other, more involved Halloween activities and it did not disappoint.
The production values are rather laughable, but the story is charming. Think of it as a low rent Harry Potter and you’re sort of on the right track. A bumbling young girl at an academy for witches has a few hilarious mishaps and a heroic adventure. This is interspersed with the daily life of a young spellcaster, and of course a grand Halloween celebration, with the guest of honor being none other than The Grand Wizard. (Not a KKK reference, more like an interpretive oversight on the part of the non-American author.)
One of the best parts of the film I bring to you now, and you’ll have to trust me when I say that it is just as hilarious in context as it is out of context as I bring it to you here. It’s a musical number by The Grand Wizard himself, whose lyrical content sits somewhere on the art scale between a 4th grader’s artful poetic hand, and a drunk’s experimentations with those magnetic word sets you get for your refridgerator
