The Seedy Underbelly of the Intertubes: LULZ mix

If you don’t know what lulz are, you should really lurk moar. The Internet Hate Machine is a lot of things – ugly, cruel, foul, and unrepentant. That’s mostly what gets reported on, and the legions of anonymous that swarm on the series of tubes’ underside are most certainly all those things. Yet it’s also very worth noting that these qualities are not the whole of the picture: the Internet Hate Machine is art, protest against blatent wrongs, and sometimes it’s just hilarious.

Falling in that first and last category of more positive attributes fits the following: LULZ – A Corruption of LOL Soundtrack. Put together by forum members over the course of a few weeks, this is a pretty masterful collection of meme-related tracks and established favorites in the communities the collection was inspired by.

Disc one is all classic memes, newer and older. Tay Zonday’s Chocolate Rain, the Rick Astley track that exploded into the Rickrolling phenomenon, Portal soundtrack favorite Still Alive, and a clever parody of American Pie (as 7chan’s theme song) are a few of the stronger high points on this disc. (And of course Bel-Air. Can’t talk memes without busting out Bel-Air.)

Disc 2 is comprised of remixes and srs bizniz techno inspired by some non-musical memes. Some major ones featured are the “series of tubes” meme generated by the hilariously unsavvy comments by Senator Ted Stevens, “I’ma firin mah lazor” a DragonBall Z reference (that track is peppered heavily with other memes as well), “over 9000″ another DBZ reference, and of course 300′s epic cry “THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!”. These remixes are all pretty masterful, although a few really stood out (and are included in the preview tape below).

Disc 3 seemed like filler to me at first glance. Nothing really jumped out as a “meme” or noteworthy song. Then I took a closer look and discovered some classics. Loituma’s Ievas Polka is an acapella song which earned notoriety when it was paired with an animation of a girl twirling a leek (it’s also a really fun song that’s inspired some really great remixes). Then there’s the National Anthem of the USSR, notably used during Soviet Sundays, and presumably related to the “in soviet russia X does Y” reversal joke/meme originally forced by Yakov Smirnoff - who is still out there doing the comedy thing, by the way. A lot of the rest of them I can’t really place where they’re from, and I was a little disappointed to see Cotton-Eyed Joe make the list, because I heard that song way too fucking much at junior high school dances.

In the spirit of every repost being a repost-repost, I have posted a few of the tracks for you to sample.

Lulz - A Corruption of LOL

Lulz - A Corruption of LOL

From Disc 1:

  • The Picard Song by DarkMateria
    • Using samples from Star Trek: The Next Generation, this remix creates an “earworm” – a song which gets stuck in your head in snippets. Not as popular as some, but still makes the rounds. Meme rating: 5/10

From Disc 2:

  • Series of Tubes (Net Neutrality Dance Mix) by manish
    • Senator Ted Stevens (AK) made himself famous by referring to the internet as “not a big truck” and more notably “a series of tubes”. If you like up beat techno remixes, you should dig this. Meme rating: 7/10

  • I’ma Firin Mah Lazor by Morbicae
    • Morbicae knocks it out of the park with this one. Serious stadium rock floats several image macro phrases up to Olympean grandeur. Meme rating: 4/10 (too “insidery” to be high on the meme scale, however… Awesomeness rating: 11/10)

Disc 3:

  • Ievas Polka by Loituma
    • The original acapella that has inspired several remixes (including a Basshunter one I didn’t really care for), and the leek spin flash. Don’t let the word “polka” fool you, it’s a catchy song. Meme rating: 6/10
